Truth has always been under assault. Today, many argue that truth is relative. They say that there is “my truth” and “your truth.” But truth cannot be personalized. By definition, truth is what is real—unchanging, not reinvented, and untouched by feelings or preferences. Truth is what corresponds to reality as God defines it, and because God cannot lie, His Word cannot fail.
And nowhere is that truth more clearly revealed than in God’s Word. If truth is what corresponds to reality, then the Bible is truth in its purest form, because it comes from God, who created reality and cannot lie.
It’s important to note that, when we say the Bible is true, we are not saying that the Bible merely contains truth or inspires truth. Instead, we are saying that everything the Bible affirms is completely trustworthy, without error, and perfectly consistent with the reality God has made known. It is reliable in all that it teaches—whether historical, moral, theological, or spiritual. Therefore, it is the foundation upon which we can build our lives.
The truthfulness of Scripture begins with the character of its Author. The Bible is true because the God who breathed it out is true. Scripture calls Him “the God of truth” (Is. 65:16). Unlike man, God cannot lie (Num. 23:19). In fact, Paul says God “never lies” (Tit. 1:2), and Hebrews goes further to say that it is “impossible for God to lie” (Heb. 6:18). The psalmist wrote, “The sum of your word is truth, and everyone of your righteous rules endures forever” (Ps. 119:160).
God cannot produce falsehood any more than the sun can produce darkness.
The trueness of God matters. If God speaks and never lies, then when He speaks, He necessarily speaks truth. Therefore, the Bible, which is what God spoke, is a product of truth. God cannot produce falsehood any more than the sun can produce darkness. His Word shines with the same purity as His nature. “The law of the Lord is perfect,” says the psalmist (Ps. 19:7). Because God cannot lie, neither can His Word.
Because the Bible is true, it is a sure guide for life. It reveals who God is, what He requires, and how He saves. In a world of confusion, it steadies our steps. In a world of lies, it assures us that we are hearing the very words of God. When everything else shifts, His Word remains the fixed point by which we can navigate life.
The truthfulness of Scripture also exposes the counterfeit truths of our culture. The Bible unmasks the false promises of sin and the empty philosophies of man. As the psalmist says, “The unfolding of your words gives light” (Ps. 119:130). God’s Word does not merely inform—it illuminates. It shines where the world stumbles in the dark, making plain the way of life.
To confess that the Bible is true is to rest your confidence on the very character of God. If His Word could fail, He Himself would cease to be God. But because He is unchanging and faithful, His Word stands unshaken. Every promise will be kept. Every warning will prove true. Every word will accomplish what He intends. To trust the Bible, then, is to trust the God who has never once broken His word and never will.
