Church Membership

Church membership is a biblical expression of belonging to Christ and commitment to His body. While the New Testament never uses the phrase “church membership,” the concept is embedded in the life and structure of the early church.

The first church in Jerusalem modeled membership from its conception. In Acts 2:41-47, those who believed were baptized and added to the church’s number—a group that was counted, taught, and cared for. This assumes a level of organization and accountability. Later, in Acts 6:3, the church is told to “choose from among you,” implying a definable group.

Church discipline, as taught by Jesus in Matthew 18:15-20, only makes sense in the context of identifiable membership. Paul reinforces this in 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 when instructing the removal of someone from the church community—a concept meaningless without clear boundaries of inclusion.

Church leadership also presumes membership. Elders are charged to care for specific souls (Heb. 13:17), and believers are called to respect and honor those who labor among them (1 Thess. 5:12; 1 Tim. 5:17). Letters of commendation (Acts 18:27; Col. 4:10; 2 Cor. 3:1) were sent when members relocated, further suggesting structured, recognized belonging.

Even the ordinances are linked to membership. The Lord’s Supper, described in 1 Corinthians 11:20-33, is not a private act but a corporate one—practiced with discernment and unity in the local body. Similarly, spiritual maturity happens in the context of the body (1 Cor. 12:12–24), not in isolation.

To neglect church membership is to reject what Christ intends for His followers. Without it, you’re a spiritual member without a local body (1 Cor. 12:12), a sheep without a shepherd (Heb. 13:17), and a family-less believer (Heb. 10:24–25). You forfeit the very environment in which Christ grows His people (Col. 3:12-14) and miss out on accountability (Heb. 3:13), support (Rom. 12:4-5), and mutual encouragement (2 Cor. 13:11).

Moreover, commitment to the church puts the gospel on display. Jesus said the world would know His disciples by their love for one another (John 13:35), and that love is best seen in the context of a covenantal, committed church family. Far from being optional, membership is essential to living the Christian life faithfully, obediently, and fruitfully.
