Ruth
Old Testament Narrative
During a famine in the judges’ era, a Bethlehemite relocates his family to Moab, where he and his sons die. His widow Naomi, along with her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth, return to Israel. In Bethlehem, Ruth gathers food in a field owned by Boaz, who notices and aids her. Boaz, related to Naomi’s late husband, legally can redeem the family property and raise an heir. Ruth requests this, and Boaz consents, marrying her and acquiring Naomi’s property. They become great-grandparents to King David.
