Acts

by Jacob Abshire on December 13, 2023

In the book of Acts, the writer wants believers to see and join God’s mission of spreading the gospel to all nations through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Acts is anchored in Jesus’ final words before His ascension: the church would be clothed with the Spirit’s power and sent to bear witness to Him everywhere. This single verse not only frames the book’s structure—moving from Jerusalem (Acts 1–7), to Judea and Samaria (Acts 8–12), and finally to the ends of the earth (Acts 13–28)—but also reveals its heartbeat. Acts is not merely a history of the early church; it is a Spirit-empowered unfolding of God’s mission to redeem the nations through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Spirit’s presence in Acts is always tied to mission. Pentecost empowers proclamation. Persecution scatters believers, and the Word spreads further. Paul’s conversion and commissioning are aimed at taking the gospel to the Gentiles. Miracles, speeches, councils, and even imprisonments all serve to advance the mission outward. Luke wants his readers to see the unstoppable movement of God’s plan—no opposition, cultural barrier, or human weakness can halt it.

By placing mission at the forefront, Acts calls every reader to recognize their place in the same unfolding story. Just as the first disciples were empowered to bear witness, so too are believers today. The book ends not with a conclusion, but with an open horizon—Paul proclaiming the kingdom of God in Rome “with all boldness and without hindrance” (Acts 28:31). The implication is clear: the mission continues.

God’s mission advances through Spirit-empowered witnesses to all nations.
