1 Samuel

Old Testament Narrative

Samuel, born to the barren Hannah, is dedicated to the tabernacle and raised by Eli. God speaks to young Samuel, who becomes a prophet. After Eli’s death, Samuel is Israel’s last judge. The people request a king; despite Samuel’s reservations, God instructs him to comply. Samuel anoints Saul as the first king. Initially successful, Saul soon becomes prideful and disobeys God, leading to his rejection as king. Samuel then anoints David, a young shepherd who defeats Goliath, inciting Saul’s jealous madness. Saul hunts David, who finds safety in the wilderness, gathering loyal followers. After Samuel’s and Saul’s deaths, David continues to face challenges.
