Wednesday Wallpaper: Church as His Mother

by Jacob Abshire on October 21, 2015

There is but one God, one Spirit, and one church. Today, it is common to find those who profess a love for Christ also professing hate for the church. While reasons of hurt might find sympathetic ears, there is no excuse for the Christian to abandon God’s church. In his famous essay, “On the Unity of the Church,” Cyprian argued for the necessity of the church for Christian development. He borrowed the “mother” motif to present the church as the bride of Christ and the honorable mother of all Christians.

This was a fitting metaphor since the Church conceives, births, nourishes, and guides the Christian through the power of the Spirit. She also is the agent through which salvation is brought to the sinner and through which godliness is cultivated. For this reason, “the spouse of Christ,” says Cyprian, “knows one home” which “she guards with chaste modesty” for God. Without the church, the Christian has very little to do with Christ and even less to do with the rewards of Christ. Let this design remind you of the importance of God’s church.

“He cannot have God as his Father, who does not have the church for his mother.”

Cyprian of Carthage
