A Christmas Blessing: Jesus is the Living Word of God

No one has ever seen God.
This is no understatement. To set our eyes upon God would mean sudden death (Ex. 33:20). We cannot look at Him bare eyed anymore than we can the sun. His glory is too much for our gaze and too much for our minds. Our bodies would tremble in so much fear that we would fall asleep — forever.
For this reason, God spoke to us. His words would be less fatal than His glory. With His words, He can give us tidbits and ease our finite mind toward the window of the infinite. He can tell us what we need in order to know Him as He is.
The writer of Hebrews tells us that in ages past, God spoke to mankind at many times and in many ways (Heb. 1:1). One of those ways was by His prophets. God spoke to His prophets through visions, animals, parables, symbols, and and more. In every instance, no matter the form or the message, it was always God who spoke.
When God speaks, it is never passé. It always profound, always deep, always truth. What God says is unlike anything that anyone else could say. For He speaks from a knowledge far superior and transcendent than anything we can know. His wisdom is infinite (Rev. 11:33). His understanding profound (Job 9:4). There is nothing He does not know and nothing He can learn. He knows more than all creation could know.
And, God spoke. Christmas is a reminder of that reality. According to Hebrews, God forewent the medium of His prophets and narrowed His speech to us by His Son. God “has spoken to us by his Son” (Heb. 1:2). Or, as John put it, “the Word was made flesh” (Jn. 1:14).
Consider the depth of this notion. God, the all-understanding, all-knowing, all-wise, whose mind is beyond limits, stopped speaking in various ways and stuffed all of Himself into a human body and was born. God’s Word was made flesh. In Jesus Christ, God spoke in the most perfectly unique way.
No one has ever seen God. Yet, God made Himself seen in Jesus, His revelatory Word (Jn. 1:18). Feast your sight on God’s Word and know Him for who He is. See Him. Sense Him. Know Him. Open the written Word of God and read about the living Word of God. For today, God speaks to you by His Son.
